Konza Prairie Visitor's Day

Konza Prairie Visitor's Day is a biennial event open to the public in even years. The majority of Konza is normally off limits to the public however visitor's day provides an opportunity for the public to see this unique area and discover the purposes of this premier prairie preserve. The next visitor's day will be in September of 2012.

Konza Prairie Biological Station is a 8,600 acre tallgrass prairie preserve owned by The Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University and operated as a field research station by the KSU Division of Biology. The station is dedicated to a three-fold mission of long-term ecological research, education, and prairie conservation. It is a unique outdoor laboratory that provides opportunities for the study of tallgrass prairie ecosystems and for basic biological research. The site also serves as an educational resource for students from elementary school to college level, and for the general public. 

VISITOR DAY ACTIVITIES

VIDEO/SLIDE PRESENTATION Learn about the prairie! Every hour from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the historic stone barn. The presentation describes the purpose of Konza Prairie, its habitats, the experimental management plan, and ongoing ecological research.
GUIDED HIKES Take a walk on the prairie! Guided hikes will be conducted throughout the day beginning at 8:00 a.m. and continuing until 4:00 p.m. Some are short (0.5 mile); some are longer (5 miles).
WAGON RIDES Tour the prairie by hay wagon! About I hour round trip. First wagon leaves at 8:00 a.m., last wagon at 3:30 p.m. Get ticket at Friends of Konza Prairie Booth ($0.50 per person).
DISPLAYS/TOURS Hear, see, feel! Discover prairie life and the effects of fire and grazing. See the prairie as a satellite sees it. Learn about prairie history and current research through poster displays and exhibits. Explore live prairie animal and plant displays. Take a guided tour of the research plots and facilities.
VAN/BUS TOURS See the bison up close! This 1.5-hour tour through the research areas and bison herd departs every 15 minutes beginning at 8:00 a.m. Obtain your ticket ($2.00) at the Friends of Konza Prairie Booth.
FRIENDS OF KONZA PRAIRIE & THE NATURE CONSERVANCY Konza Prairie T-shirts, hats, posters, mugs, and other items available for sale at the FOKP booth. Information about The Nature Conservancy and book sales at the TNC booth.
