Burn Training

- And the Winners are . . . . Over fifty individuals braved the snow and bitter north winds to attend the Konza Prairie Biological Station (KPBS) Burn Training and Refresher Program that took place Saturday February 28, 2009 at the Cortelyou lecture hall on KPBS. In addition to learning about the KBPS burning program, the protocols used in burning the prairie and enjoying home-made cookies, the winners of the highly coveted Crimson Torch awards were announced and awarded their prizes. The Crimson torch award is made to those individuals who contribute the largest number of hours to the burning program on KPBS. There are now three categories: 1) Docent, 2) Individual and 3) Lab. Myron Calhoun was awarded the Crimson Torch in the docent category. This was the first year for this category and recognizes the vital contribution that docents make to the burning program.

Burn Training

It is fair to say that without this group, many watersheds on KPBS would not be burned. Myron was the run-away winner in this category but with his arm in a sling, other docents see their chance to win the award this year. Sheena Parson (from the Joern lab) walked away with the individual award and is primed to see if she can take the 2009 prize. She suggested that if there was a tie in this category this year, that the tie-breaker be a run from KPBS to Bushnell Hall. The Blair Lab put in the most hours burning last year and thus received the Crimson torch award in the lab category. It appears that with his new lab members, this lab is the front runner for 2009. However, it is obvious that other labs (based upon the number of individuals who questioned the data from last year) are very dedicated to make sure that it doesn’t happen! At this meeting, a change in the procedures for determining the winners of the award(s) was announced. It was decided that the Crimson torch award would be announced at the end of the Spring season. This would ensure that graduate students who graduate in Spring would still be around to received the award. Remember, please sign up to burn as much as possible, make sure you sign the sheets at the fire house to get credit for your time and maybe you (and/or your lab!) can walk away with one of the Crimson torch awards for 2009! And as David has said many times: “Only you can prevent Forests”.
